Hello!
Welcome to my substack!
So I’ve started a Substack newsletter; here’s what you can expect.
1. Why this, why now?
For the longest time, the only way I could connect with anyone was by talking about movies and TV shows.
Two years ago, I graduated from university with a Liberal Arts degree in English Literature and Film studies. I loved writing essays, analyses, and reviews, and with my background as the editor of my high school’s yearbook, I so badly wanted to take on some journalistic pursuits, something carefree and freelance like a film-connoisseur version of Carrie Bradshaw, à la Sex and the City.
But unfortunately, in this Gen-Z gig economy and as a fresh undergrad with no professional experience, it means there’s not really a market for that. I started just writing via Letterboxd, but then I discovered Substack and its paid model. So why not give it a shot?
2. What kind of community am I looking to build here?
I’m calling the film girlies and gays here. The film industry is notoriously a boy’s club, but I want this film newsletter geared towards someone like me- a girl who likes tartan prints, anime, and appreciates a good matcha latte with a Sofia Coppola film.
3. What are you going to see?
All subscribers will see my film reviews, and yes, suggestions are welcome. You will be getting my honest, non-corporate reviews of movies. Completely honest journalism and essays, if you will. Paid subscribers will get all my thanks and love, for supporting a freelance writer.
For now, since I’m just starting, I just wanna have fun writing again. I’m aiming for once a week.
